ACS Launches ACR1251T USB Token NFC Reader II
HONG KONG, 9 Mar, 2020 - Advanced Card Systems Ltd. The ACR1251T is the token version of the ACR1251U PC-linked NFC smart card reader with the 13.56 MHz contactless technology. Following the ACR122T, the token version of the world’s first CCID-compliant contactless reader - ACR122U, the ACR1251T offers more and advanced features. It is designed to support not only ISO 14443 Type A and B cards, MIFARE®, and four types of NFC tags, but also FeliCa Mobile Devices via NFC Peer-to-Peer (P2P) mode as well as extended APDU command feature. The ACR1251T effectively supports post-deployment firmware update through remote firmware upgrade eliminating the need for additional hardware modification. Its PC/SC-compliance allows interoperability across different applications and platforms. What are the Contactless Devices that ACS offers?
ACS has 2 product families for the contactless product line: ACR122/1222 and ACR1281. ACR122U is the world’s first CCID-compliant NFC tag reader, released to the market during Q1 of 2008. Several variations of the ACR122U were developed to support various applications, bringing about the ACR122 product family. The ACR1281 product family supports high read/write speed, making it suitable for highly demanding applications. The ACR1281 product family also includes dual interface for both contact and contactless smart cards.

What are the contactless cards supported by ACR122/ACR1222?
ACR122/ACR1222 NFC readers support MIFARE® cards (Classics, DESFire), ISO14443 Types A and B, FeliCa cards, and NFC tags Type 1-4, with the exception of ACR1222U-J4 FeliCa Web-To Reader, which only supports FeliCa Mobile phones with versions 1.0 and 2.0. Note, however, that we are working on enhancing ACR1222U-J4 to support NFC-enabled phones, and will announce NFC-compatible versions, once they are ready.

What are the different versions of ACR122?
ACR122U is a PC/SC compliant USB NFC Reader, which offers interoperability of devices. ACR122T is a token version of the ACR122U, which offers portability for personal use. ACR122S is a Serial NFC Reader that uses RS232 communication protocol, which enables plug-and-play operation without requiring driver installation. ACR122L is a Serial NFC Reader with LCD that comes with various built-in peripherals: 4 LEDs, Buzzer and a 2-Line Graphic LCD that provides users a clear indication of the reader, card or operation status. Its RS232 communication protocol also enables plug-and-play operation without requiring driver installation. ACR1222L is a USB NFC Reader with LCD that comes with various built-in peripherals: 4 LEDs, Buzzer and a 2-Line Graphic LCD that provides users a clear indication of the reader, card or operation status. Its PC/SC compliance in all reader interfaces and firmware upgradability offer interoperability and support for post-deployment firmware updates, respectively. ACR1222U-J4 is a device specifically designed to support FeliCa Mobile devices in Japan, and is used mainly for mobile marketing.

How do I install the ACR122/ACR1222 driver to my system?
USB devices (i.e. ACR122U, ACR122T and ACR1222L) use CCID drivers, therefore installation can be done through Windows Update. In case the Windows Update is not available, please download the driver from the ACS website: http://acs.com.hk/en/drivers/. Serial devices (i.e. ACR122S and ACR122L), require libraries for high-level programming, which are available from the ACS website: http://acs.com.hk/en/drivers/. For low-level programming, no drivers or libraries are needed. Lastly, the ACR1222U-J4 requires driver installation when changing the URL or updating the firmware. The CCID driver installation can be done through Windows Update.

Why are there entries about the ACR122/ACR1222 in my Event Log under Windows even when the device works properly?
These entries are created by the Resource Manager under Windows and sometimes can also be found even if there is no problem with the reader. Please ignore these entries if the device works properly. Otherwise, please contact ACS support at [email protected].

What is the difference between ACR1281 and ACR122/ACR1222 Product Families?
ACR122/ACR1222 Product Family’s contactless card and NFC tag support make is suitable for NFC related applications. It can be used for various contactless applications including micro payments, loyalty programs, visitor management, and physical access control. ACR1281 Product Family’s support for both contact and contactless smart cards makes it suitable for various smart card applications, including existing contact smart card systems to be migrated to contactless technology. Also, ACR1281’s high smart card read/write speed makes it suitable for government applications. Lastly, the firmware upgradability can support post-deployment firmware updates.
