• What are the different ACS Dynamic Password Generators?

APG8201 is a standalone handheld device for generating one-time passwords from the user’s EMV card and PIN. It is compliant to major banking standards such as EMV Level 1, MasterCard CAP and VISA DPA. APG8201 can also support PC-linked operations that can be used for Secure PIN Entry (SPE) to protect the PIN from security attacks. APG8202 is a standalone handheld device for generating one-time passwords from the user’s EMV card and PIN. It is compliant to major banking standards such as EMV Level 1, MasterCard CAP and VISA DPA.

• In what types of applications can the APG8201, APG8202 and APG8205 be used?

The one-time password (OTP) functionality of the APG8202, APG8202 and APG8205 makes them suitable for online banking applications. The OTPs can serve as added security before several transactions like banking logons, online transactions and telephone orders can be performed. Also, APG8201 is equipped with a Secure PIN Entry (SPE) function, which ensures safe PIN entry and PIN change in a PC environment. The PIN is securely entered on the device rather than on the vulnerable PC or workstation, hence eliminating the possibility of a Virus/Trojan getting of the PIN. This security feature is helpful in home banking and government e-ID applications.

• How can APG8201, APG8202 and APG8205 help save money?

Financial institutions can distribute the devices to customers to minimize risks associated with sensitive data and online banking systems. More importantly, complicated device issuance or re-issuance strategies are no longer needed, lowering overall implementation cost. And since the APG8201, APG8202 and APG8205 also work as standalone devices, no specialized programming is required.

• What is the difference between CCID and HID?

The main difference between these two versions is that their plug-and-play feature is delivered differently—one complies with CCID and the other has HID support. Aside from this, the CCID version supports both memory and MCU cards while the HID version supports only MCU cards. Users who do not want to worry about driver installation issues are advised to use the HID version, as it is already pre-installed in most operating systems. On the other hand, the CCID version is for those who opt to have a plug-and-play feature especially designed for smart card readers, since the USB CCID class driver is based on the PC/SC platform.

• Why do I need a PC-linked Reader with Mass Storage instead of using a simple SIM-sized Smart Card Reader?

Aside from being a SIM-sized card reader, PC-linked readers with mass storage have a flash drive feature that extends the capabilities of your application, be it for GSM solutions, e-Commerce, e-Banking, Network Security, or Data/Application Storage. With various options for partitioning the flash drive, the PC-linked reader with mass storage enhances security and flexibility in storing different kinds of software or applications, such as PC log-on, instant messaging, or other corporate/government software requiring the user to plug in a valid SIM-sized smart card into the reader to log in and run certain programs. PC-linked readers with mass storage also enable you to carry more files wherever you go. You can retrieve and edit documents, view transaction histories, and run applications directly from the USB token as long as there is a computer around. Furthermore, you can utilize your smart card to secure confidential files—you can cut out a partition as a protected area, which can only be accessed after smart card authentication from the flash memory.
